The original Jefferson Airplane was popular during the mid to late 1960's when many of the groups that were popular were hippie-based groups or groups whose focus was drug themed songs. Jefferson Airplane was one of those groups, except they were more of a rock band than groups likes the Mamas and the Papas

The original Jefferson Airplane was first popular in the mid sixties. They had several hits at this time and this is when they really started to build up their fanbase. It was much later that they formed Jefferson Starship.
