You will have to check your coin, because the first new pence initially was minted from bronze and it had been issued in 1971, although it had been available in banks some weeks before the issue data. In the original design both sides of the coin are encircled by dots and the inscription is ELIZABETH II D.G.Reg.F.D. year.

Interesting - the 1p coin was issued in 1971. There are also coins for 1972, but these were only issued in proof format and commonly issued in a blue booklet with other new coins. However, the five and ten penny coins were issued in 1968. It is important to know the value of the coin you have.
