Film Noir was around in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. It started around World War II and ended about ten years later. Double Indemnity is considered the quintessential Film Noir movie. Touch of Evil, made in 1958, is widely recognized as the last film of this genre.

The early 1940's up until the late 50's although the term was not commonly used until the 1970's. At the time most films we now think of as Noir were actually thought of as melodramas.
