You should dethatch your grass when it is in full harvest which is usually around the fall months or later when it comes to this process. It will take about a couple of days to detach the grass.

Thatch needs to be tended to when it gets so thick that water will run off the surface of it rather than percolate down into the soil. If you tend to the grass regularly it won't get thatch in the first place, thatch is just dried-out mummified grass that can't decompose into humus.
