Parakeets and Budgies will molt twice a year, in the late summer/early fall and again in late winter/early spring.

These birds you have will molt for the first time at the age of 6-7 months. Then again at 12 months. Also your bird may molt on an off time because of weather change. It is not uncommon for a bird to molt if the weather suddenly becomes warm.

Mainly it is done in the Autumn and Spring, but depending on the conditions of its environment it can also be all year long.

Birds molt just like dogs shed. They should molt once or twice a year with the weather not only to change the fill of their feathers but also to regrow health feathers. However, if they seem to be continuously molting there may be a dietary or cage sanitation issue.

Any where from one to three times per year is generally accepted as "normal" molting for birds. However the actual times can vary greatly - this is especially true in different climates.

It is normal for them to be molting and losing when they are in mating season. They molt their feathers to take a new form to be more attractive to their mates. If they ever molt when they aren't mating, then your parakeet or budgies has a big problem, and should be fixed.
