The wooden flute is a traditional Irish instrument but you can play most of the traditional Irish tunes on a regular flute. For a dance you need a mixture of jigs, reels, and hornpipes. Marches, waltzes and polkas are also popular. You can look up music by searching for session music.

Irish dance music often features the flute. Some excellent pieces to play for an Irish dance would be "The Devil In Dublin," "The Men From Ulster," "Music In The Glen," "She's As False As She's Fair," and "The Miller's Maid."

When it comes to good old Irish songs that can be played with a flute I highly recommend the Star of County Down. Not only is this song lively, but a flute added to it with a solo performance really gets people in the spirit to dance. It's also pretty easy to play.

I would say that James Gallway is probably the best artist to go for Irish flute music. He has one album of him with an Irish fiddler group called James Gallway and the Chieftans. James Gallway even has a CD out called James Gallway: Dances for Flute which contain many Irish folk songs.
