The lead singer of REM, Michael Stipe is now producing movies and has been a movie producer since 1998, with movies such as Runner-Up (2008), Saved! (2004), Thirteen Conversations About One Thing (2001), The Sleepy Time Gal (2001), Stranger Inside (2001), Being John Malkovich (1999) and Olive, the Other Reindeer (1999)!

Several things happened to REM. When Bill Berry left, the backing vocal feel couldn't be recreated. Peter Buck and Michael Stipe seem to be interested in various different projects, resulting in less time (and effort? ) in the band.

They do a few shows here and there but they are mostly on the down low. They are going to release a live album on October 27, 2009.

REM are still producing and performing music. In 2008 they released an album called "Accelerate. " This album was followed by an extensive tour.
