There are several different reasons for white patches in the mouth, lichen planus, a skin rash that occurs in the mouth, Smokers tongue which is caused by squamous cell carcinomas.

The white patches can be due to a yeast infection known as Candidiasis or Leukoplakia, which is associated with oral cancer. The condition is due to smoking or chewing tobacco where white patches form on the mouth and tongue. Burns from hot foods or beverages can also cause white patches, but these are benign.

A fungal infection can cause white patches and sometimes they don't hurt. There is a special powder your doctor can give you to help. He should probably check something out like this anyway.

These could be malignant growths which should be examined by a physician, especially if you are a smoker or are exposed to smoke frequently.
