What were the thirteen colonies?

They were the original British settlements in North America. There were no other colonies at the time of the Revolution, though Canada was invited to participate as well.

The Thirteen Colonies are known by that name because they are the thirteen that were in existence when the American Revolution was won and the U.S.A. was formed. They were: New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia. Any other colonies, like Vermont, were territories before statehood.
