In 1862 Chimborazo Hospital was established in Richmond, Virginia. It started out as a residential home and office building owned by Richard Laughton. It eventually became five hospitals with a surgeon in charge of each hospital. Each hospital was set up to take care of the the servicemen from the same state. The hospital never received money for the government.

The third largest hospital in the Union during the American Civil War was Jefferson General Hospital, located in what was then Port Fulton, but is now Jeffersonville, Indiana. The location was picked because of its excellent water and railroad access.
