The Romantic Period of classical Western music, roughly corresponding to the 19th century, was an era in which expression of emotion and drama predominated in music. The polite and carefully-constructed forms of 18th century composers gave way to passionate, sometimes lengthy, works focused on self-expression. Schubert, Wagner, Berlioz, and Brahms are good examples of European Romantic Period composers.

The Romantic Period was a movement to start focusing on the self and expressing the emotions or different perspectives of life in order to get away from the realism of the classical era. Many composers saught to depict nature in a new way and use foreign scales such as whole tone and pentatonic to create a new musical sound.

Music from the romantic period included a large amount of piano, flute, and violin, with soft melodies and lyrics (many songs were just instrumental).
