Forrest's first of 3 continuous runs back and forth across the United States starts in Alabama and ends in California. He passed through Arizona and Utah at that time. On his way back the second time going from Maine to California he probably went through North Carolina.

The movie isn't really clear about his exact running route. We know that he ran across Alabama and can assume he went west since he reached the west coast first. He ran through the desert and crossed the Mississippi river a few times.
