After doing some research, i discovered that most home-improvement stores sell "ceiling paint." This paint supposedly has a different formulation to better stick to downward-facing surfaces. My understanding is that they also spatter less so that the painter doesn't get too messy.

I wonder if you mean to get rid of your textured ceiling by painting. You can't. If that is the intention, here's the solution: get spackle from a hardware store and spackle the entire ceiling. Tires your arm, but it is beautiful and you can then paint it with any paint you like.

Any paint you want from the paint store will work. When painting a textured ceiling you should use a sponge painting method. With the textured area, you can't roll on the paint. You can also use a paint sprayer, but this is messier and yo uwill need to cover everything including the wall.

Some people recommend using spray paint for a textured ceiling. Another popular method is use flat paint and paint with a large roller. It's important to use painters tape to tape the corners to avoid drips. You should also buy your paint from a reputable source.
