It is helpful to know what your teenager wants a laptop for. If they play a lot of games or download a lot of music, they will need a big hard drive, and a lot of ram to have their programs running smooth-a PC. It they are more into creating art, then they probably would prefer an Apple computer.

Find out what the teenager will use it for most. If they play games, a dedicated graphics chip is a necessity. For pictures and movies, a big hard disc will allow them to fit more onto it. Other uses will have different priorities.

It depends largely on the purpose you are buying for. If they plan to use it for only viewing webpages and emails, and some word processing, you may want to look into a "netbook" like the Asus Eee Pc. If they plan to do a lot of gaming on their laptop, the Dell XPS series laptops are an excellent choice.

If this is for studies choose atom or the similar kind of processor else, buy Core two duo or the latest I3, I5 or I7 processors. This is useful for everything with the latest operating system. After you buy it modify the internet settings accordingly and there are some packages in the market which restrict the bad website access.

Do not be fooled by highly talked about brands like Apple. They are a rip off for the price you can get a much better computer with better specs. If the teen will be putting lots of movies and music on the computer make sure to buy one with a large hard drive.

- If it's for games, make sure to get a good graphics card - If it's not for games, look more to portability and battery life than strength

What a teenager needs is two things. An internet connection and a standalone video card. Any laptop with these features will be fine. The bigger the screen the better.
