Most shrubs do well with morning sun and afternoon shade. Some of these include flowering dogwood, eastern redbud, japanese maple, azalea, hollies, gardenia, Japanese pittosporum, camellia, and heavenly bamboo. Prune shrubs in January or February while they are dormant. This is the best time to transfer them, too.

There are a variety of shrubs that grow well in North Carolina. Some are New Jersey tea, Shrubby St. John's Wort, Virginia Sweetspire, Fragrant Sumac, and Highbush Blueberry. All of these shrubs grow well in high drought areas, like North Carolina.

Juniper will thrive in the Carolinas. They will remain green all winter and are tolerant to salty ambient air (depending how far east you are).

best to plant any type of tree or shrub when it is dormant but a bit before it will begin new growth in the spring.
