Mother dogs need to have access to all the food and water that they want. They are probably nursing a big brood and need the strength as well as the nourishment to make milk for the puppies.

A mother dog needs more food than you normally feed her and it is suggested to give puppy food for several weeks after she gives birth because it provides a lot of concentrated calories and is high in protein and fat. That means she will get all the nutrition she needs but not get too full.

A balance diet is what will be necessary and maybe some vitamin supplements if necessary, most dogs are normally ok and do well on their own.

Female dogs need a larger portion of high quality food while they are expecting and nursing. The back of the food bag will recommend the right quantity for the dogs size.

Most vets will tell you to feed the mother a little more high protein food. Also make sure she has plenty of fresh water.

A pregnant dog should be fed up to one and a half times as much food as she ate before. A nursing dog should be fed as much as twice the amount. Experts recommend a high quality puppy food rich in nutrients. Supplements should only be given by a Veterinarian and of course keep water available at all times.
