In terms of condition, a chair with the original finish will be considered of greater value than one that has been refinished. Another important aspect to check is the construction. If it is pegged rather than nailed, it is probably an older and, therefore, rarer chair.

Something which affects the value of an antique rocking chairs is the condition of the rockers. Make sure the rockers are not so flattened from use the chair still rocks.

Research is important when buying a new rocking chair, to make sure the money you are spending is valid. Often, retailers will try and pass off things as 'antique' and charge more than what the piece of furniture is worth. A second opinion from an expert ensures you are making a worthy purchase.

Look for wearing of the paint or stain particularly in the areas where hands and feet would rest on the chair. They also tend to be in dark color/stain.
