If your bonds are ever lost, stolen or destroyed, you can submit their serial numbers to the U. S. Treasury to have the bonds re-issued at no charge.

Serial bond numbers are unique to each savings bond. Each one is issues to a specific person (or people) using their social security number and this is correlated to the savings bond serial number. The saving bond serial number is used to prevent counterfeiting.

Serial bond numbers are used for tracking of bonds, part of the serial number is part of the owners social security number. Definitely write down and keep a list of your bonds and serial numbers so if they get lost, burnt in a fire or something liek that you can submit them as lost.

One should know the types and serial numbers of US savings bonds as they only pay interest for a certain amount of time. Focus on the US savings web site and that site will give you maturity dates and what the value is of the bonds. The site will give the bondowener the value of the bonds.

Serial numbers are used to track that particular bond. If you have a list of the serial numbers and your bonds are ever lost, stolen or destroyed in a fire or flood, they can be reissued to you. You can also find out what your bond is worth.

If you ever need to replace a lost bond, you need the serial number. Also, the serial number will determine if the bond is a E/EE or I bond.
