It is important to carry jumper cables all the time. Bad alternators are sometimes misdiagnosed as bad batteries, so be sure it is not actually your alternator. Jumper cables are useful all the time, newer designs use the cigarette lighter.

Well if the battery doesn't hold a charge then it gradually loses energy as it sets. As long as the engine is already running it will act fine. If you leave it off for a period of time it will drain what little energy is left in the battery and eventually the engine will not start.

A driver should always take care that the battery is filled with ample distilled water and its cells are dipped and the driver should start the car on daily basis.
