First, determine where the rats (you probably have more than one) are gaining entry to your home. Block these access points. Next you need to decide how to deal with the rats who are already inside. Poison is ok for homes without small children or pets. Lethal and non-lethal traps work well too.

A cat is a good solution! You can use a rat trap placed in the correct place with an appropriate bait. Rat poison is an option but you will need to locate the dead rat and dispose it off. Some people say that human urine repels rat! Try it!!

I have had the same problem. I would just try to keep a door open to the outside and chase them out with the broom. Or, for one unfortunate soul, got killed with the same broom. You would also try to use rat poison, though you will have a foul smell in your home where ever the rat dies.

First of all, try to find out where it hangs out - if it's all over the house or just a certain area. If it's anyway near food, try to keep it all well packaged and covered. Buy some traps and put them out around the areas you believe he likes to hang out.

If you have just a few rats you should purchase good quality rat traps and bait them with cheese or rat baits.

The first thing to do is to clear up all paper clutter that is on your floor, tables etc. Any holes that you noticed should be immediately stuffed with brillo.
