Our dog just sprained his leg. When limping lingered, we went to the vet to be sure it wasn't serious and to check his hips. (His breed is subject to dysplasia.) After examining him, the vet prescribed pain medicine. When limping continued, the vet did x-rays, found nothing wrong, and prescribed "light rest." Our dog is fine now.

Soak your dogs leg in Epsom salts and wrap it with an ACE bandage. I had this problem and my husband laughed at me and the above is what the vet stated.

You should take him or her to the veterinarian to ensure that the leg isn't broken. Although you think that the leg may only be sprained, it may turn out to be a more serious injury.

The best option would be to take the dog to the vet who may have a brace to put around the dog's leg to prevent the dog from using this leg. Otherwise if you have a bandage at home, you could wrap this firmly around the leg to help prevent the dog from using the leg while it heals.

comment to the anonymous user who has the 3 month old chihuahua. Your dog could have a luaxting patella which means the knee cap moves to the inside of the leg. It is hereditary.
