Be sure the materials are not only fire resistant, but fire proof. Fire resistant materials can still burn and make bad fireplace framing. Stone or faux stone works great as a frame for fireplace. Liquid nails along with real nails put in for support work well for hanging stone that's 1 1/2" thick or less.

Try adding small tumbled glass tiles if the surface is flat. The effect with a fire in progress is amazing. It also sparkles if plain sunlight hits it

To make the fireplace the central focus of your room, you can install a mantel around the fireplace. Different types of mantles include hardwood, granite, marble even brick... Pick which ever one suits your decor. If you want simplicity try using tile or mirrors.

I have had my old gas fire taken out and would like to turn the fireplace back to a real fire, the trouble is that its back to brickwork and i thought you have to line the fire place
