What purpose does propylene glycol serve in a humidor?

How does this chemical affect the humidity, and how is it used?

Propylene glycol prevents mold and bacteria. Also, it forms a layer on the surface of humidors, which absorbs humidity at humidity over 70% and emits humidity at humidity below 70%.

Propylene glycol is used in humidor in order to control the moister level. It is mixed with water and can actually pull ecess moisture out of the air to help try it out. Making it harder for mold to grow.
