I would consider Wicked to be a mixture of fantasy, romance and fairytale storytelling. I don't think that it really falls into any one genre. It is a retelling of the story of the Wizard of Oz from a different perspective. That may give you a little bit more understanding of that.

I personally feel that Wicked the musical should fall under the genre of Contemporary Musical Theater. Wicked is a musical that really makes its own genre.

It's musical theater. The various songs in Wicked's book can be classified individually, depending on the time signature and style, but the work as a whole is classified "musical theater." While the songs can be taken out of context and performed separately, the original intent is that they be performed as a whole.

Generally "musical theatre" is it, or specifically it might be considered a "book musical." I kind of like the concept of "gesamtkunstwerk" for it though, as that includes the concept of several arts including music and dance and was originally coined to describe a combination of drama and opera. I'm not sure how else to classify it.

Wicked is a tremendously successful Broadway musical that puts a spin on the Wizard of Oz saga. It has many songs and they can be classified under the genre of Broadway musical or show tunes.

It comes under drama and theatre. That is the genre it consists of. Many confuse it as pop as well.
