Usually medications that are 1cc (or more), and are caustic to soft tissue such as skin and fat. Your annual flu vaccine is an example.

I am not sure but are not nerve blocks and medicienes that are cortizone have to be administered this way. First they give you a pain killer drug, then they give you the cortizone. Many people with back problems get this.

Many medicines are given by IM injection. The usual reason for an IM injection is due to one of two factors. Either is due to the amount being given, or that the medicince has a harshness about it a shallower shot would be harmful to the skin of the person
