What materials prevent the transmission of sound?

Almost any material will prevent the transmission of sound. Sound is a wave that propagates through air. Question being,how much of a specific material is required to either baffle or completely absorb the sound wave. A cement wall will prevent sound transmission as will foam material in an anechoic chamber.

The less dense the material, the slower speed of sound transmission and propagation slows. However, one must consider sound attenuation which is a function of elasticity of the material that the sound wave is traveling through. If the material is elastic like string, then it takes longer for it to die off versus a less elastic material such as styrofoam

Concrete does the job pretty well, but pure lead walls will completely stop the soundwaves that are trying to get through to your ears

sound cannot travel through a vacuum, like space for example.
