A "stout" beer is a dark and bitter beer made with roasted malt or barley, hops, water, and yeast. Some stouts even use oatmeal in the brewing process to make it sweeter. The average alcohol content for a stout is usually 7% or 8%.

A content of oats mixed with the barley and greater toasting of the grains before fermentation will define whether a beer is a stout.
