There are some things to observe. First, webbed feet suggest an aquatic turtle. If they are completely webbed (flippers) then it's a sea turtle! A domed shell means a box turtle. Red crescents on the legs mean a painted turtle. If their jaw is hooked and there is a dark shell- it's a snapper! Soft-leathery skin means a softshell turtle.

Inspect the turtle thoroughly. Webbed toes means your turtle is a swimmer and claws means its a land turtle. Shells, stripes, and other characteristics will help determine the kind you have. You can purchase a turtle field guide or find one at the library and compare yours. Research online or take it to a pet store for help.

This is very difficult to answer without more information, but if you just picked the turtle out of the wilderness it is more than likely a common box turtle. These are darker in color, and usually have decorative markings on the shell. In the U.S. these are the most common to be found outside of the water.

Determining what type of turtle you have depends on several factors. One, where did you obtain the turtle? Did you find it outside or did you buy it from a pet store. Chances are if you obtained the turtle from a pet store, you probably have a Red Eared Slider.

To answer that question I would need descriptions of the turtle. Did you find it outside or buy it at pet shop, there are tons of different species of turtles.
