Some are for magnification: microscopes, telescopes, magnifying lenses. Some are for separation: filters, cetrifuges,etc. Some are for measurements of dimensions or properties. Some are for mixing, combining, heating cooling, etc.

They use a huge variety depending on the type of science they do. There are electron microscopes, particle accelerators, basic scales, GPS devices to track animals, and centrifuges to name just a few of the things they might use.
