Question by  Tate20 (15)

What kind of bleeding should I expect after a D&C terminated pregnancy?

I had an abortion a week ago, and am still bleeding. How long can I expect the bleeding to last after a dilation and curettage?

You should not experience bleeding more than a normal period in duration and amount if your abortion was performed within the U. S. legal limits of a first trimester abortiion. The earlier into your pregnacy the abortion was performed, the less bleeding you should experience. Anything more than that, you should contact your primary doctor.

Typical to still bleed after one week. Report to your doctor if bleeding exceeds 8 saturated pads in 8 hours. Can experience spotting for a few weeks after D&C.

Usually you will bleed for one to two weeks after a D & C. You may pass many blood clots and the blood tends to be very dark red to almost brown. You may have a very heavy flow for a few days and it will start to lessen just like a regular period. Cramping may be severe.

There is no saying just how long you will bleed every person is different. I had a friend who bled for 3 weeks after her's. If you are really concerned you can talk to your doctor.

Normally, light cramping and bleeding will occur for no more than two weeks following a D&C though normal periods can resume in as little as two weeks making it appear that bleeding is abnormally prolonged.

It should only last a week. If it looks like coffee grounds (dark brown and grainy) call your doctor. If it is bright red and only spotting, wait.
