The superstition around the evil eye is that someone's gaze or stare will cause harm to someone. Most often children and babies are the target for the evil eye because everyone says they are so cute most of the time. Eye shaped jewel will reflect evil back to the curser.

The evil eye can either be unintentional or deliberate. If unintentional, usually no harm comes of it. If deliberate, it is thought to cause, injury, illness, poverty or death. At one time, a stranger or person with an odd characteristic was thought to have an evil eye. The same was said of anyone whose eye contact lingered too long.

This superstition goes back to the Bible and the commandment about coveting. The basis is that person has the power to give a look that can kill or harm another.
