What is the song "American Pie" really about?

One of the main lyric's in 1971 hit by Don McLean is " The day the music died" This is believed to be a direct reference to the February 3rd 1959 plane crash, That took the life's of Buddy Holly ,Ritchie Valens And the Big Bopper.

That song is about the death of Buddy Holly. He died a very sad death at a very young age. He died in a plane crash just outside of clearlake.

The idea is "As American as apple pie." The song is about the history of Rock and roll in America. "The day the music died" refers to the death of Buddy Holly. In the song, Mick Jagger is Satan, Bob Dylan is the Jester, and Elvis is the King.

Its about apple pie and the perilous fate of those who do not consume it. "But the levy was dry" refers to a poorly made pie.
