the clapperboard divides up the scenes and takes on a movie set. the board can show the scene number and the take number the sound the clapper makes is recognisable on the audiio track.
The main purpose of it is to help identify that particular recording. It will have the scene and other information written on it to help keep it organized when it is stored as well help in the editing process.
