The most common used mediation for kennel cough is called Tamiflu. This medication is most effect if the cough is caught early. Along with the Tamiflu you veterinarian will also prescribe an antibiotic, a regiment of rest, and plenty of fluids. Keep them in quarantine and follow up with after-care.

It depends on the severity of the cough and age of the dog. If it's a pup, you can try Robitussin for children if it's not too severe. For adult dogs, if it doesn't clear in a week you may need antibiotics. There are vaccines available but none are 100% guaranteed.

Usually its an infection in the lungs that will sometimes go away within a few days and never return. however, if the cough persists you should see a vet for antibiotics because it can lead to several more harmful ailment in dogs. it should be taken very seriously, but is far from uncommon.
