What is the proper length of roofing nails for a new roof/

I have a friend who is a professional roofer. He swears that you must use 1-1/4' Hot Dipped Galvanized Roof nails. He also states that hand nailing is better than gun nailing. With hand nailing you can feel a miss-nail and it is easier to sink the nail perpendicular to the roof deck and at the proper depth.

The size of the nail depends on the size of the wood used for the roofs base; it must be long enough to infiltrate a minimum of ¾' if not totally through the base. The typical size use is 1 to 1 3/4 inch.

The nails should be long enough to penetrate the roofing material, felt paper and roof deck sheathing and then barely protrude into the attic. Longer than that is wasteful.

I work for a home remodeling company and we do several kinds of roofing. Standard lenth for roofing nails for us is 1 3/4" galvanized roofing nails. Anywhere from 1" to 2 1/2" is generally acceptable depending on your application.

the roofer also used a 2 1/2" shingle he cut right in the middle of a row is this proper? they also put factory edge to cut edge.I thought you made a cut in the begining and at end all factory edges to factory edges?

a roofer laid shingles on my roof.he laid a full starter row un cut..he than laid a full first course uncut and all seems lined up he then put metal flashing under all the first row of shingless is this proper installation?
