RSVP is French: Repondez s'il vous plais. This means "please respond" as in "please let me know if you are coming or not to the event for which I have invited you." In this case, the host/ess wants you to communicate even if you cannot make the event.

Respond s'il vous plait. It is literally French for "respond please", but nobody says respond please. It is considered to be a formal way of writing an invitation much in the way that law makers use latin phrases even though law would be more accessible to commoners if they simply used plain English.
