Pre-op education has two important functions. Patients need to know what type of surgery will be done and how it contributes to weight loss. More important, people will have the best weight loss and remain healthy by combining the surgery with other measures. There are risks of complications, and the pre-op education helps patients avoid or recognize those too.

Prior to bariatric surgery, patients must understand fully the commitment involved. The surgery doesn't remove weight. The patient loses weight because they eat less, due to their now reduced stomach size. The surgeon must be sure the patient understands and is emotionally capable of following a special, rigorous diet and all the other post operative instructions to avoid life-threatening complications.

It is incredibly important. Weight loss surgery alone will not help a patient lose weight and keep the weight off permanently. That takes discipline and work.
