Pantomime originated in the time of Thespis (who also brought acting into a form of entertainment). From Thespis, the Greeks relied heavily upon pantomime to fully realize the drama's they were producing, as some of the fantastical things that were being represented could not be efficiently (or inexpensively) produced.

It goes back at least to the ancient Greeks. The first performance on record of pantomime was done by the actor Telestes in the play "Seven Againts Thebes" by Aeschylus.

Pantomine is Greek in its origin, but it's influence can be traced to one person, Grimaldi. Grimaldi was a famous clown that took pantomime to a level of popular consciousness.
