The law will protect you as soon as your report your credit card stolen. You need to contact your credit card company immediately. They will be able to close your accounts and inform you of the right steps to take.

As long as you report this to the credit card company in a timely fashion then you will not be liable for the charges.

If you know who stole your card, you can file charges. If someone unknown to you used your card, contact the credit card issuer to make a report and have the charges removed. The responsibility for reporting and following up is yours.

You should quickly go and file a stolen credit card report at your local police station. After you file this report you then need to contact your credit card company to let them know what has occurred. If there are any questionable charges, they should refund those quickly once the dispute is known.
