The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is an essential component of the vehicle emissions system. It allows spent (burnt) exhaust gases to "re-injected" into the engine intake air stream, in order to burn them twice to remove hydrocarbons.

The purpose of the EGR valve is to allow exhaust to re-enter the engine so it can be burned again. This is mainly for emission reasons.
