Your first step would be to get advice from a patent attorney. There are some scams online concerning patents where you pay for the patent and you somehow get ripped off.

If you want to do it on your own you can file a application that idea for the product is yours. You have then a year to produce product.

You have to go through the government and patent it, this will stay for about 20 years and no one will be able to copy your idea.
