This observance is based on the festival described in the Bible at Lev. 23:29-43. Today, it is still celebrated by those of the Jewish faith. It was originally instituted to celebrate the gathering of the produce of the land that God had provided. It is also called the Feast of Booths because families were required to dwell in booth-like tents.

It's a holy day of God, one of seven celebrated by the Jewish faith. Originally people would travel from all over to partake in this massive feast. It was originally started in Israel.
