What is the etymology of the word "booger"?

The source and history behind the word "booger" isn't very clear. Related to the slang "bugger", the first usage as "booger" meaning "dried mucus" was found in 1892.

Thought to be an alteration of English dialect "buggard" or "boggart" the combination of bug plus -ard, date of origin 1866.
