What is the difference between real and fake gold?

I want to make sure the ring that my boyfriend gave me is real and not fake, how can I find out if the gold is real?

What difference will it make in your relationship with him? He offered it with affection. Maybe his budget didn't allow for Real Gold, maybe it did. Treasure the gesture and get to know him better. Talk about things that will matter in the long run, like goals, spending habits, travel, schooling. See if he listens to your opinion. Good Luck!

The easiest way to tell is to take your jewelry to a jewelry store and a dealer will tell you if it is real or fake.

If you wear it and there is no discoloration on your fingers and the color doesn't wear off, that's a good sign. You could also go to a jeweler and ask them.

A genuine gold ring should have the gold karats (gold weight) stamped inside the ring. Ten karat, fourteen karat, eighteen karat, or twenty-one karat. The surest way to check for gold content is take your ring to a jeweler and have it appraised.

Gold rings usually have a stamp on the inside of the band stating the various grades of gold. Such as k10 is ten karat gold and so on. However, some do not have that marking on it and if that is the case you will need to take the ring to a jeweler for verification.
