Myths are stories that are used to explain how the world works like where the rain comes from. Legends focus on individual people and their deeds that set examples and teach right from wrong. Both make use of heroes, gods, and supernatural events.

While it is true that these words are frequently used in similar ways, myths typically have more resonance with human psychology, while legends are often more fantastic and contrived.

Typically myths are completely fabricated stories about a subject that have no truth to them at all. Legends are usually stories that started as a history story but evolved through many generations of retellings.

Myths are usually tales that involve metaphor to describe a fantastical story. Legends are tales that have been passed down through generations usually told to remember historical detail.

A myth usually deals with very important and foundational events, such as the creation of the world, or the origins of something very important - e. g. love, fire, war, gods. A legend deals with individual figures in history, people who were interesting but not usually supernatural.
