What is the difference between Mix and Blend in recipes?

Do you have to use a mixer with one of the terms?

When a recipe says to mix you should always use a mixer to get all ingredients thoroughly incorporated. When a recipe says to blend you can do this by hand with a spoon, mix until moistened.

Can be done my hand or beater. Mixing is more vigorous to incorporate ingredients. Blending is just to combime. Over blending (mixing) can cause the product to turn out tough.

When it says "mix" you must use a mixer. Blend usually means your going to take the ingredients and break it down usually to a liquid state and blend it with the other ingredients in the recipe. As the name implies you must a use blender when you see the word blend.

To mix something means that you can mix it with a spoon or the blender. However, if the recipe calls "to blend" something, you should use your blender.
