What is the difference between a receptionist and a front desk agent?

I see jobs posted for both, but the duties sound the same.

These are virtually the same positions. Companies use different terminology to attract potential employees. The intrigue of the unknown lures clients to read on. The main focus should be on the actual job description, rather than title.

The receptionist can be restricted to answering the phone and taking messages, along with very basic computer skills. The front desk agent is found at the main front desk of a large hotel, who handles reservations, assisting arriving customers in obtaining their room, and ensuring they enjoy their stay.

The difference is, that a front desk agent responsibilities include a more pro-active approach with the entire company, and dealing with more administrative duties. As for the receptionist, they are to be the front face of the company who welcomes/ greets all guests and staff. However, both roles are very similar to one another.

Receptionist is old fashioned and mostly used in a small business organisations. The qualification of a receptionist is a secondary school certificate while a front desk officer has above school certificate (e.g. OND, HND or BSC) To some, the word receptionist is becoming offensive when you compare their qualifications.
