I thought there was a skunk lingering in my backyard, but my husband thinks it's a polecat.

In the US, there is no difference, a polecat is another term for skunk. They are one in the same, I'd advise not going near it.

A skunk is a specific species, and "polecat" is a bigger category of mammalian animals including skunks, civets, and several individual species like the European polecat and the marbled polecat.
