Firstly, the Big Bang theory describes how the Universe came to be. In short, the big bang wasn't really a bang at all. For one, sound doesn't propagate in free space. Secondly, the birth of the Universe was more like a rapid expansion of space and time.

This theory suggests that everything in the known universe began as a collective, compacted group of atoms fit into a small space which eventually exploded because of it's overpowering energy. Like a boiling pot with the lid rumbling, sooner or later it will explode. This is a very simplified explanation.

The big bang theory describes the early universe, which was much hotter and denser than it is today. At its beginning, the universe was very hot and expanded rapidly, hence the name big bang.

The "big bang theory" is a commonly held idea that the universe had to start from somewhere - a big bang that thrust all matter and energy into existence.
