There is a behavioral theory that attempts to aid people with phobias. It's called exposure therapy. It doesn't start with jumping in the lake, but you work your way up to that point in incremental steps of increasing levels of exposure. A therapist might have you start in the first few sessions to think of being in the water.

Systematic desensitization would be the best way to overcome such a fear. This would involve graduated exposure to water combined with the use of relaxation techniques.

Talk to a qualified psychologist. He or she can help you to overcome your fear. Don't try to face this alone - a professional is a valuable resource in this case. Most likely the therapist will use either cognitive behavioral therapy or exposure therapy.

I learned in psychology class that immersion therapy can be very useful to help a person deal with a phobia. Shame on whoever told you to jump in a lake, these fears need to be conquered slowly in a way that will make you feel safe.
